Choosing a CFI

A CFI, or Certified Flight Instructor, is your flying coach. They will teach you everything you need to know about how to become a pilot. You will be spending many hours learning from them so it is important you fly with someone you like!

CFI check list:

  • Look up the CFIs at your airport and read their bios and see which ones may be a good fit for you

  • Book lessons with CFIs that you would like to fly with and see what it feels like to learn from them

  • Find 1-3 CFIs and ask them the best way to schedule

    • Some airports have online schedulers but then the CFI may prefer you call or text to book flights

    • CFIs often have other careers and only fly on certain days or times - be flexible!

  • Keep an open mind

    • We all have to work with different personalities in life and learning to fly is the same

    • CFIs all have their own system of teaching, so be able to adapt and get the most out of your lessons

Flying Lesson Facts

  • Did you know if it is raining or windy, you most likely won’t fly that day? Many of your scheduled flights will be cancelled due to weather

  • Low clouds can also deter a flight lesson

  • Most CFIs will over-schedule you knowing weather will get in the way

  • MOTION SICKNESS: flying lessons include turbulence, stalling, banking, landing, taking off, and other fun maneuvers that will make you queasy. This is often temporary but if you are struggling ask your CFI for suggestions (like ginger gum)

  • Flying lessons are expensive, up to $300 each one. Make sure you are studying between lessons, taking notes and also applying to scholarships (learn more here) to help with the cost and maximize your learning.
