What is A Medical?
The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) medical certificate is like an official doctor's note that says you are healthy and safe to fly a plane. You can take flying lessons at any age, but you must pass this medical exam and be at least 14 to fly a glider solo, or 16 to fly an engine-powered airplane solo (alone without a CFI).
*You can have enough hours to solo but without your FAA medical certificate you will not be able to proceed in the student pilot process and solo.
Quick Facts:
To be a student pilot, you need a Third-Class Medical. It is all you need for flying for fun or personal travel.
To receive your medical clearance you will need an exam by an AME, or Aviation Medical Examiner.
If you take any medication for anxiety, depression, ADHD or have serious medical issues, the process can be longer and much more complicated. You must request a consult with the AME before proceeding in the student pilot process to see what your options will be.
*IMPORTANT: Common medications taken during adolescence for ADHD, anxiety and depression can delay or disqualify you from becoming a pilot. Have your parents carefully look into the medical requirements and process.
Be prepared
Inquire at your airport about how to schedule a medical exam with their AME or their suggested AME.
If you have taken medications in the past that are flagged by the FAA schedule a consult with the AME, not a medical exam, to discuss your best path to receiving your FAA medical certificate.
Have your vision evaluated before your medical exam and get the appropriate glasses or contacts if needed.
